Third arena debate set 2.11.14

PRESS RELEASE

The third town hall-style Sacramento arena debate between R.E. Graswich and John Hyde will be held on Tuesday, February 11, 2014, from 7 to 8 p.m., at Belle Cooledge library. Former Sacramento County Sheriff John McGinness will moderate the event, sponsored by Inside Publications.

Organizers are expecting a lively debate at the South Land Park location. The prior debate on January 9 at the Pocket-Greenhaven library was vigorous and took place before a packed house with standing room only.

“Interest in this issue has been intensifying as the signature count continued,” Hyde said. “The level of discussion was lively at the second debate and the audience was absolutely engaged. We probably could have answered questions for another hour or more.”

With the petition count now complete, it seems more likely that STOP’s “Voter Approval” initiative will appear on the June ballot. Nevertheless, the initiative is certain to face legal challenges, and this situation will form the backdrop for the Belle Cooledge debate.

“Under the initiative process, the economic future of downtown Sacramento and the Kings’ existence here hang in the balance,” Graswich said. “It’s essential that Sacramento voters get thoroughly educated on this issue. The stakes are huge.”

“Truth and consequences” will therefore be a key theme in the third debate as Hyde and Graswich attempt to sort out fact from fiction. Once again, the event is proudly hosted by Inside Publications, monthly news magazines serving the communities of East Sacramento, Land Park, Pocket and Arden.

The first two debates were moderated by former Sacramento City Council members, Lauren Hammond and Rob Fong. McGinness, the host of a popular midday radio show on AM 1530 KFBK, spent more than 27 years with the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department. His knowledge of the region and today’s issues means he will be able offer his own perspective in addition to the positions staked out by Graswich and Hyde.

Media Invited to Videotape or Live Stream

Organizers invite the media to cover this event or stream it live. Seating is limited at the South Land Park location, and we believe a wider audience around Sacramento will be interested in viewing the debate now that the initiative has qualified for the June ballot.
